18th Century Oak Staircase Refurbishment

My client asked me if there is anything they could do with their staircase as it was very old and falling apart. We love a challenge! So we set about devising a solution. Some would say it would be easier to take the old staircase out and start again. Easier said than done when the house was built in the 18th century and it was supported by a timber scaffold and rubble.

So we carefully strengthened the staircase by putting extra supports underneath along with expandable foam. We then cut our templates to match each tread. Then in the workshop we made all treads and risers out of American white oak, and finished with an anti slip oil and fitted with screws and pellets.

This was a exciting and challenging project but I think it transformed the stairs and it’s more safe to walk down.
